การใช้รากศัพท์ (Root)
การศึกษาคำศัพท์โดยใช้รากศัพท์(roots)มีประโยชน์ต่อการเรียนรู้ความหมายของคำศัพท์มาก เนื่องจากการเรียนรู้ความหมายส่วนต่างๆของแต่ละคำ และการนำส่วนต่างๆของคำมารวมกัน จะทำให้ทราบความหมายของคำที่ไม่คุ้นเคยอีกหลายคำและเป็นวิธีการเพิ่มจำนวนคำศัพท์ที่ง่ายและมีประสิทธิภาพด้วย คำศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษจำนวนมากเกิดจากรากศัพท์(roots)ตัวเดียวกันดังนั้นความหมายหลักหรือความหมายพื้นฐานของคำจึงเหมือนกันและถ้าแยกคำออกเป็นส่วนๆได้แก่รากศัพท์(roots)อุปสรรค(prefixes) ปัจจัย(suffixes) เมื่อได้ศึกษาความหมายของแต่ละส่วนแล้วจะทำให้ทราบความหมายของคำนั้นๆได้ เช่น
euphony = eu (prefix) + phon(root) + y (suffix)

รากศัพท์ (roots) ส่วนใหญ่มาจากรากศัพท์ในภาษากรีก (Greek roots) และละติน (Latin roots) เป็นส่วนที่แสดงความหมายหลักหรือความหมายพื้นฐานของคำที่ใช้สำหรับสร้างคำอื่นๆ ตัวรากศัพท์(roots)จะมีความหมายตรงกว่าส่วนประกอบอื่นๆของคำและเป็นตัวชี้แนะที่สำคัญต่อความหมายของคำศัพท์ที่สร้างขึ้นทั้งคำ

Affix

อุปสรรค (prefixes) เป็นส่วนของคำที่มีความหมายในตัว ที่เติมเข้าข้างหน้ารากศัพท์(roots) เพื่อเพิ่มหรือเปลี่ยนความหมายของรากศัพท์นั้น แต่ไม่ได้เปลี่ยนหน้าที่ของคำศัพท์ที่เกิดขึ้นใหม่ อุปสรรค (prefixes)ในภาษาอังกฤษมีจำนวนไม่มาก ในการอ่านออกเสียงจะมีน้ำหนักเบา และไม่เน้นเสียง เช่น

เมื่อนำรากศัพท์(roots) มารวมกัน อุปสรรค(prefixes) จะเกิดคำใหม่ที่มีความหมาย

Suffix
ปัจจัย (suffixes)
เป็นส่วนที่มีความหมายเฉพาะตัวที่แยกออกมาจากคำศัพท์ เมื่อนำไปประกอบไว้ท้ายส่วนที่เป็นรากศัพท์(roots) จะกำหนดหน้าที่ให้กับคำ (parts of speech) ตำแหน่งของปัจจัย(suffixes) จะอยู่หลังรากศัพท์(roots) ในการอ่านออกเสียง suffixes จะมีน้ำหนักเบามากหรือไม่ออกเสียงเลย ตัวอย่างของการเติมปัจจัย(suffixes) และเปลี่ยนหน้าที่ของคำ เช่น
